Negronis make me think of summer, and this upscaled version is now my favourite drink for cocktail hour on the patio. It is smooth and creamy, full of aromatic and complex flavours, making it an absolute pleasure to sip and savour.

What goes into a Blood Orange Negroni Sour?

Blood orange – Freshly squeezed blood orange juice gives this cocktail it’s beautiful deep orange colour. Plus, it’s less acidic than regular orange juice. Can’t find blood oranges? You can also use Cara cara orange or ruby grapefruit.

Gin – Use any well-balanced gin. I prefer a dry, London-style gin, without any extra flavours such as cucumber, rose, etc.

Aperol – This bright red Italian aperitif adds bitterness, colour, and that classic Negroni flavour. A classic alternative to Aperol is Campari.

Sweet Vermouth – I used Vermouth Rosso, or red vermouth.

Lemon juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a light touch of acidity.

Bitters – I used Angostura bitters, but any bitter will do. A citrus-based bitter would be even better!

Egg white – Egg white is what gives this cocktail its foamy creaminess and a pleasant mouthfeel. It helps blend all the flavours together. I used pasteurized liquid egg whites, which makes it easy to measure out the amount needed, and makes it safer to drink the raw product.

How do you make a Sour?

You all all the ingredients to a shaker, add ice, then vigorously shake until the drink is light, foamy, and well-chilled. You can also shake the cocktail without ice at first, which will give an even stronger foam, and then shake a second time with ice to chill the drink.

Pour the mixture into a martini glass or a coupe glass, and garnish.
